EEPG Best Schoolbooks Awards 2003

This is the fourth year of the EEPG Best Schoolbooks Awards. The aim of this award is to promote excellence and quality in schoolbook publishing, and to offer recognition to the best publishers, authors, designers, editors and graphic designers of these books within each European country.

Each participating EEPG member sent a copy of the schoolbook they wished to enter to all other participating EEPG members, along with a letter outlining why this is their best book. The candidate books were also sent to the European Quality Team (a group which has developed a Quality Guide for the Design and Evaluation of Educational Materials for the Commission of the European Communities). The votes of the participating EEPG members were given the weight of 75% whereas the votes of the Quality Team had a weight of 25% when calculating the final scores. All members have rated each book under the headings of Content/Syllabus, Layout/design, and Price/marketing. The total number received determined the winners. The winner received a Gold Certificate, second place a Silver Certificate and third place a Bronze certificate at the Frankfurt Book Fair at the EEPG stand, Hall 6.0 A 905, at 17.00 on October 8, the first day of the Fair – as in the previous years. Furthermore the books ranked 4 to 7 received a special merit award.

Who are the winners of the EEPG Best Schoolbooks Awards 2003?

The structure of the book and the interactive way of learning literature is the result of a wide market research investigating the opnions of hundreds of teachers about the way a reading book should look like. The well thought-out and original layout, together with lavish illustrations, engenders enthusiasm for various categories of texts. Finally a great variation in approaches to exercises and tasks for raising the awareness of language and texts challenge to users to work individually or in groups with te material. High quality aspects include transparency, consistency, attractiveness, generativeness and participation.

Silver Certificate

Gyldendal Undervisning, Norway: "ABC-Boka" ("ABC-Book") – Norwegian ABC book for Primary School; Authors: Kåre Kverndokken and Trine Solstad

The opening of the book is highly innovative, using the metaphor of opening a laptop, whereby the book invites to use various media in a modern way of teaching literacy. The structure and contents, including the exquisite illustrations, generates reading appetite and reading skill with both national and global aspects. An important dimension is the use of exercises and tasks to encourage co-operation and communication between teachers and parents. The letter illustrations stimulate story telling and give inspiration to theme work and cross-curriculum activities. The package includes a handwriting book, two activity books, a big size Class book, a teacher’s guide, an audio CD with recorded texts and linking to a web site which works together with the package. High quality aspects include transparency, generativeness, participation, attractiveness and socialisation.

Bronze Certificate

Bokförlaget Natur och Kultur, Sweden: "Unga filosofer" ("Young Philosophers") – Anthology for the Upper Secondary School; Authors: Olof Franck and team of authors

This anthology deals with philosophical questions about epistemology, morality and meaning. The main innovation of this book – apart from a very original layout – lies in the fact that contributors are actual young and currently active Swedish philosophers presenting texts that concern their own areas of study. Thereby the eternal questions of philosophy are formulated and addressed form a genuine modern perspective. Each essay is accompanied by discussion topics that can be worked with individually or in groups. High quality aspects include reliability, attractiveness, generativeness and socialisation.
