Keynote speakers:
Dominik Lukes, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Reading and Writing Innovation Lab
Dominik is the Assistive Technology Officer in at the University of Oxford where he established and runs the Reading and Writing Innovation Lab. Previously, he worked as the Education and Technology Specialist at Dyslexia Action and worked on a number of international projects focusing on readability. In his previous work, he has translated academic books into Czech and written a textbook and grammar for learners of Czech as foreign language. He advises companies and publishers on creating more inclusive reading experiences. His background is in general linguistics and natural language processing. He started and publishes the newsletter AI in Academic Practice.

What kind of reader is ChatGPT? AI and the future of reading.
Abstract:
ChatGPT is known for generating texts but very quickly people have started using it to support reading: Creating summaries, outlines, comprehension quizzes and even translation. This has great potential to expand inclusion and accessibility of text at all levels. Readers with visual and cognitive impairments will be able to access a wider range of texts in more modalities.
But how does ChatGPT read a piece of text and what is it doing when it is generating a summary or a translation. How is it similar and different from other tools.
This presentation will focus on what publishers should know about how ChatGPT and other generative AI tools work and how they can leverage the knowledge to meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities for increasing inclusion. ChatGPT is only one example of a tool in this rapidly growing ecosystem and this presentation will outline how it fits in and where even smaller institutions can take advantage of this technology in innovative ways.

Integration of Ukrainian children in education systems of host countries in Europe
Abstract:
About half a million Ukrainian children were enrolled in education systems in the EU at the beginning of the school year 2022/2023, with varying rates of success and very diverse situations across Member States. Many more displaced children from Ukraine remain outside the education systems. The recent Ukraine refugee crisis has put many countries in the EU under considerable pressure to accommodate and integrate large numbers of refugees, mainly women and children, in a very short time.
Children are a particularly vulnerable group due to their forced displacement, but their needs are not always met by the education systems. The presentation will draw on the work of UNICEF that has been working with state and municipal authorities and other key partners to help deliver solutions for displaced Ukrainian children in the host countries. It will look at the progress so far and factors that promote integration. What policies and practice were put in place by the host countries to support holistic approach to the learning, social and emotional well-being of Ukrainian children? The presentation will focus particularly on the neighbouring countries and how they have responded to the refugee crises.
